Digging up sentiments, one at a time.
Charnel refers to both the Hallstatt ossuary of painted skulls,
as well as the french charnel, meaning fleshliness, sensuality, carnality.
In the first years of my painting practice, my aim is to depict recognizable, almost everyday scenes, moments which could take place in our immediate living environment, were we to adopt a little imagination and romanticism to them. They evoke a sense of longing: a scene of grandfather and child fishing, a still life, a view of an open air bath house.
It’s a practice of exploration. I love to work eclectical.
My art is not only deeply personal, but I do try also to voice the universal – it touches on feelings and situations that are recognizable to us all, without pinning itself down to one story. To the contrary even: I like to delve into the multitude of the world. It may be a futile endeavor, but I will try to convey as much through painting as I can.
I invite you to look slowly. Because stillness is something to cherish in a world of accomplishment and quick fixes.
Layers of meaning unfold beneath the surface: social structures, unspoken tensions and silent observations of human behavior, through the use of color, composition and subtle details, it is an ode to that which is ordinary, but never unremarkable.
Certain themes that seem to crawl into my portfolio are the next, but I will not allow to restrict myself to just these:
Seclusion and proximity, friendship and love. Desire, hardship, utopia, inspiration, femininity, play, repose.
Reflect on this: where do you feel at home, and what symbolizes your own crafted spaces of this big earth? What are your deepest desires, your dreams and pitfalls? I won’t provide clear cut answers, but what I will do is offer the space, for inquiry, for doubt, for recognition, for perspective, for refutal. And I hope you will make me a part of our shared journey.
