New Orleans

Mardi Gras in quite the happening in New Orleans. The celebration begins on Twelfth Night – or the Day of the Three Kings – and ends on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the day that begins Lent. The city is filled with spectacular parades with floats, costumes, and musicians. People wear colorful costumes and masks. There are traditions such as “throw me something” (catching beads or other items thrown by the parades), and eating King Cake. This painting depicts a group of natives in their original dress participating in the parade.
