Les Gilles de Binche

I had to include a carnival of my own region into my series of festivities. The Gilles occur in several municipalities. They announce the carnival six, four, and two weeks in advance. Their costumes usually consist of a mask, a hat with ostrich feathers, a spherical costume, clogs, a basket with oranges or blood oranges, and many more according to local customs.
The exotic costumes date back to an extravagant party held in 1549 at the Palace of Binche in honor of Philip II of Spain.
